Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world. More than 80% of the population relies on subsistence agriculture and lives on less than $2 a day. Drought, poor soil, lack of adequate communications and other infrastructure, a low literacy rate, and an economy vulnerable to external shocks are all longstanding problems.

Female genital mutilation, child labor, child trafficking, and social exclusion of accused sorcerers remain serious problems, although the government has taken steps in recent years to combat these phenomena. Few “Burkinabe” have had formal education and the majority of the population is illiterate.
