Haiti is the least-developed country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest in the world. Lack of food, natural resources, political instability and uprisings have added to Haiti's economic stagnation and continue to severely affect the population. The majority of Haitians live on less than $2.00 per day and over half the population is illiterate.

The history of Haiti is fraught with religious turmoil and voodoo practice. It is widely believed that the history of Haiti's Independence includes a traditional ceremony where two voodoo priests made a "pact with Satan" against the white man's god. Many Christians believe that this pact still affects the overall spiritual health and direction of the country. In 2003, the Haitian government recognized voodoo as a religion and currently over half the population practices voodoo mixed with Roman Catholic traditions. In order to combat the religious turmoil, the poor economy and poverty, humanitarian and evangelistic outreach is crucial.

Christian World Outreach (CWO) began working in Haiti in 1979 and is currently operating a children's feeding program, a church development program, a leadership development program, youth camps, a medical clinic, and two vocational training centers.
