Since the mid-1990s, the Zimbabwean infrastructure has been deteriorating rapidly. Political turmoil, drought and food shortages have led to considerable economic hardships.

According to the United Nations World Health Organization, the life expectancy for men in Zimbabwe is 37 years and the life expectancy for women is 34 years of age, one of the lowest in the world in 2006. The HIV infection rate is very high at over 33% for people aged 15-49. Christian World Outreach (CWO) began working in Zimbabwe in 2004 and is currently working with AIDS orphans and holding leadership development programs.
